Releasing Tension And Stress With Reiki

Just like the sun brings much needed energy and life to strengthen trees, Reiki can do the same for you.

I think we can all agree we could use a break from all the stress and tension in our lives. I know I do from time to time. It’s a large reason I started on my Unbothered Goddess journey.


One thing in particular I’ve been dabbling in is Reiki. If you haven’t heard of it, you’re not alone. I didn’t even know about it until I started doing some research.


I can honestly say it’s a pretty cool experience unlike anything you’ve had before. Think of it as a massage, but a much more spiritual experience.


What Exactly Is Reiki?


Before I get into my own experience, I should probably explain what Reiki actually is. Reiki is used to encourage relaxation and reduce stress. It’s a Japanese technique that’s derived from the words Rei and Ki, which mean “higher power” and “life force energy” respectively. To simplify it, Reiki is a spiritual healing practice.


Much like healing with crystals, Reiki works on the principle of vibrational energies. One thing I love is it doesn’t involve taking any kind of pills or liquids. Instead, a light touch is all that’s necessary to help balance your own vibrational field and promote healing and stress relief throughout your body and mind.


Put Your Fears Aside


Right now, this might all sound a little strange, but let me put a few of your fears to rest. First of all, you stay completely clothed the whole time. Plus, you don’t have to worry about getting that one masseuse who presses too hard and leaves you feeling sore instead of relaxed.


Instead, Reiki uses incredibly light touches that are soothing and surprisingly effective. This isn’t an actual massage, but it may feel like one, especially from the inside.


Understanding The Purpose


If you just have a pain in your neck or back, a massage or a chiropractor works well. However, if you’re tense all over or feeling overwhelmed with stress, Reiki helps to soothe you. Of course, it’s not just about stress relief, though I do love that part. The ancient technique is designed to promote wellness and even aids in healing if you’re already sick. You can use it to compliment other medical treatments for faster healing physically and emotionally.


Unlike a medication, Reiki works to correct emotional, spiritual, physical and mental imbalances. It’s truly an overall well-being form of treatment and self-care.


My Own Experience


When I tried a Reiki healing session for the first time, I admit I had a moment or 2 where I was a little bit freaked out. Of course, this could be thanks to my obsession with supernatural-themed TV shows (I may not watch really TV, but I love those type of shows when I do watch something).


She started by putting on some light music that helped to clear my mind. When I laid down, she placed her hands lightly on me. I don’t know how, but every where she touched, I felt warmth radiating from her hands into me.


Before you say anything, she wasn’t doing anything to warm her hands. I even looked around and there wasn’t a heater or anything to be found. She didn't even rub her hands together or blow them (first thing that freaked me out like how can you focus your energy like that). Instead, it’s like the warmth came directly from her own energy. It was a surprisingly peaceful and relaxing experience.


My WTF moment was when she said she felt another energy attached to me. She did ask if I had children, which might explain the other energy, but I just politely said no. I’m honestly not sure why I didn’t tell her about the miscarriage but it was interesting that she could sense another energy (and no I wasn't pregnant yet or close to the time frame when we conceived).


Know What To Expect


It can be kind of startling to realize someone’s hands are creating a warm, soothing energy as they touch your body, but that’s completely natural with Reiki practitioners. During your session, you’ll need to take off your shoes and jewelry. It’s also recommended to wear natural fibers, like cotton or linen, to make it easier to connect with your energy.


To complete the experience, your practitioner may put on soft music like mine did or have soothing nature sounds and dim the lights. Their hands may linger over areas for as much as five minutes. Plus, you may experience the phantom hand phenomenon. Don’t freak out! Even though the practitioner’s hands are one place, the healing energy may affect completely different parts of your body, making it feel like you’re being touched in both places at once. Interesting, right?


I still do Reiki healing sessions from time to time. They’re a great way to cleanse the system and restore balance. I highly recommend them as at least an occasional form of self-care to take better care of the goddess you truly are.
